What Is SEO (Search Engine Optimisation)? A Plain-English Primer

SEO has a vocabulary designed, it sometimes seems, to keep owners dependent on consultants. Underneath it is a simple idea. This is the explanation we wish every owner had before their first agency meeting.

How a search engine works, in three steps

1. Crawling

Automated programs follow links across the web and fetch pages. If your pages are not linked from anywhere, or are blocked, or take too long to load, they may never be fetched. Your job: make sure every page is reachable, fast and not accidentally blocked.

2. Indexing

The search engine reads each fetched page, works out what it is about and stores it. Clear titles, headings, readable text and structured business details make this accurate. Your job: make each page obviously about one thing.

3. Ranking

When someone searches, the engine pulls candidate pages from the index and orders them by how well each matches the query and how much the engine trusts the source. Your job: be the clearest, most complete, most credible answer for the queries that matter to you. Ranking factors that matter goes deeper.

So what is optimisation?

Everything you do to help those three steps go your way. In practice it groups into four kinds of work:

  • Technical: the site is reachable, fast, secure and mobile-friendly.
  • On-page: each page is clearly about a specific query and answers it well. See the top on-page techniques.
  • Off-page: other sites and platforms reference you: reviews, citations, links, mentions.
  • Local: your business profile and the consistency of your details across the web, for businesses serving an area. Small business SEO strategies is mostly this.

What SEO is not

It is not tricking the engine. Hidden text, bought links, keyword stuffing and generated pages worked briefly a decade or more ago and are now reliably detected and penalised. It is not a one-time project; positions drift as competitors improve. And it is not instant; new or improved pages typically take months to settle. Anyone promising otherwise is selling something else. Outdated strategies to avoid lists the specific things to refuse.

Why local is different

If your customers come from a radius, most of your valuable searches trigger a map result built from business profiles rather than websites. Proximity to the searcher, profile completeness, reviews and consistent citations decide those. Your website still matters, as the destination and as a trust signal, but the profile is often the first page a customer sees.

And the AI part

Search engines now often answer directly, and assistants recommend businesses by name. Those answers are generated from the indexed web and from business profiles, weighted by the same trust signals. There is no separate trick; the businesses that show up are the ones with complete, consistent, well-referenced information and clear pages. Why SEO matters explains this in more depth.

What to do with this

Audit against the four kinds of work

Read the SEO hub, then audit your own business against the four kinds of work above. Most small businesses find two of the four badly neglected, usually local and off-page, and those are also the cheapest to fix. Then decide whether to do the rest yourself or hire it, armed with enough understanding to judge the answer; becoming an expert as an owner covers that judgment.
